Demise of My 365 Project

At the beginning of May I was finding it difficult to be excited about producing the 365 images. The first few months went relatively well, although some of the photos were forced just to produce something to say I got it done. The I got sick. While I was sick, I thought a lot about my photography even though I wasn't actually using the camera. During that week I listened to a number of photography related podcasts and all of them mentioned the same thing - only show people your very best work and show people what it is that you want to shoot. If you want to shoot portraits, don't have a bunch product shots on your website. That got me thinking whether or not what I was doing with the 365 project was the right thing.

For sure I got a lot of good out of doing it for the xxx days that I did it. I captured some interesting images that I probably wouldn't have thought about otherwise. While I was laying around feeling miserable, I also thought a lot about what I wanted to accomplish with my photography and what kind of images I want to create and moments I want to capture.

I love sports. Football, tennis, auto racing - you name it. I also love shooting them. I knew that was an area I wanted to pursue even before my time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the last few weeks (more on that in an upcoming blog post). I also love nature and landscape photography. My time in Montana and capturing the land and animals there is one of my favorite times of the year. So it seems that these two areas are where I want to concentrate my efforts.

That said, I still plan to shoot a lot of other things - stereoscopic photos, HDR, time lapse, portraits, fine art, whatever. Any time I see something interesting I want to capture that moment. I love capturing a slice of time and freezing it for eternity.

Not being pressured to fulfill a random image for my 365 doesn't mean I won't be working on my photography everyday. Quite the contrary. I actually will be committing even more time to it - creating a new website or two to showcase my photography, editing, reading and looking at others work, and trying new things creatively with the camera and software (although you may never end up seeing it).

So I'm closing one door to open another. I am really excited about this evolution - I can't wait to see where it takes me!
